Navigating the complexities of family can be challenging, especially when roles change unexpectedly.
Here, at “Our Grand Daze,” we understand the profound journey grandparents embark upon when they step up to raise their grandchildren.
Our journey began in 2017. Initially, the children were placed in my mother’s home through CPS. However, by May, circumstances shifted, and my youngest grandson came to live with me; this was 2 weeks before his 5th birthday.
By year’s end, fate had intertwined our paths further, bringing my granddaughter and older grandson into my home, ages at that time 10 and 14.
With my then 15-year-old daughter still living at home, all of our lives were turned completely upside down.
Adopting the kids wasn’t the initial plan. The hope was that their mother would turn her life around, allowing me the cherished role of just being their grandmother again. However, when CPS decided permanency was necessary, the system would not allow me to just take guardianship; it was adoption or an uncertain future for the children.
Through this journey, one thing I figured out quickly was the importance of connecting with fellow grandparents and kinship caregivers.
The need for understanding, shared experiences, and mutual support inspired the creation of this platform. While I write under a pseudonym to safeguard my grandchildren’s privacy, the stories, struggles, and moments of joy shared here are authentic reflections of our lives.
